Brazilian Açaí Bowl

Brazilian Açaí Bowl

Açaí bowls are the healthy craze at the moment. They’ve been more and more popular each day and you can find them in pretty much every healthy/organic/paleo shop you visit. And that’s great! I mean, açaí is a superfood (as they say) and it’s a powerhouse of antioxidants, plus it’s delicious and the perfect refreshing breakfast, snack, lunch, dinner….

And just in case you are still wondering, açaí is pronounced: ‘ah-sah-ee’

In Brazil, açaí is vastly consumed and found in every major city and all over the coastal area and also, in the Amazon (obviously). It is originally the staple food for many communities in the Amazonian area and it is consumed as a savoury dish, often with prawns or fish and manioc (cassava) flour, as the pure berry is not sweet. The local population relies heavily on its consumption as it provides enough nutrients and energy for a long day of work.

In the rest of the country and now also, around the world, the sweet version of it is the bomb. Açaí na tigela or açaí bowls in Brazil are eaten with guarana syrup (guaraná is also a typical fruit from the Amazon which contains stimulant properties and is extremely popular as a soft drink called Guaraná Antartica) fruits and granola. But, as guaraná syrup is virtually impossible to get unless you buy açaí pulp sweetened with it, I’m gonna show how Brazilians eat it (here in Australia).

Here, you have the option to serve it as an ice cream for those really hot days…I like having it this way as a dessert as it really has the texture of ice cream. Top it to perfection with pieces of strawberry, banana and kiwi (obviously, I ran out of those when I made it…oops!)

However, if you prefer the traditional way, you can add just fresh bananas as the typical Brazilian Açaí na Tigela…like a thick smoothie consistency.

I like to top it with lots of oats, seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, hemp) and nuts, so I make sure I always have some granola at home. You can find the link to my crunchy granola here.

So, here’s the recipe for a healthy, fresh, tasty and full of flavour açaí bowl.

      Hi Ian,
Sorry for such a late reply, I’ve been on holidays. 🙂 Here in Brisbane you can find pure açaí pulp in most Health stores like Flannery’s, Healthy Life…although, if you order online they probably ensure that the product arrives in good condition. Hope you can find it easy and give it a try soon. It’s perfect for breakfast.
      Cheers,
      Larissa

Hi Kika, you can find a distributor near you through Amazon Power website. I only purchase the açaí pulp in 100g packs (they are pure and contain no sugar). Here’s their website: https://www.amazonpower.com.au/
